We may know them, raise them or be them, this International Women's day it is time to embrace and celebrate our womanhood!

Why do we celebrate International Women's Day?
It all started over 100 Years ago in 1908, when 15,000 women marched in New york to demand better working conditions, shorter hours and better pay (in actual fact, equal pay). Women also wanted the right to vote! This was then declared the first national women’s day. A couple of years later in 1910, German activist, Clara Zetkin, decided it should be international and women should be celebrated all over the world! She was an advocate for young women and the rights we now have today.
So the first official International Women's Day was recognised in 1911 so we are technically about to celebrate our 111th even though it was only made official by the UN in 1975!

People often associate this day with the colours purple and green, these colours can be seen vividly at marches and rallys even to this day. This is due to the connotations of the colours; purple, recognising justice and dignity while green symbolises hope.
Women have come a long way in the past 111 years with winning the right to vote, fair pay and more respect in society. We thank our ancestors for their help in making these changes possible and the unfair world they lived in so we could thrive in our lives today.

So how can you celebrate?
Celebrate with your family and friends, with your mum and grandmother, sister, aunties, your friends and even with your dad, grandads, brothers and uncles. Have a gathering, talk about history and reflect on how far we have all come and how we can improve for generations to come.
Self care and taking care of yourself is an important part of being a strong independent woman, you need to look after yourself while conquering your daily tasks! This can be going for a walk, seeing friends or family or taking time out for yourself and doing some pampering.
Wear green or purple, show you stand with what these colours symbolise and understand how history has helped us achieve our independence through the years.
